Highways England spoke of a “vehicle striking a bridge”.
There are queues 4.5 mile queues on the London-bound M20 approaching the scene of the accident between between junction four for Leybourne and junction three for Borough Green.
Images from the scene show two trucks trapped under the rubble while video footage shows the top of one lorry’s trailer smashed off and debris scattered across the tarmac.
The busiest single day for motorists embarking on leisure journeys is expected to be Saturday, when 10 million drivers have been predicted to be getting behind the wheel. “All I could see was the wreckage”. “The back end of the lorry was in pieces”.
The graphic designer, a passenger travelling from Maidstone to Sevenoaks, said: “The motorcyclist was laying down underneath his bike”.
Witnesses and emergency services say a truck has struck an overpass and collapsed a pedestrian bridge onto one of England’s busiest motorways, the M20, injuring one person.
Meanwhile, the coastbound M26 has been closed at junction five of the M25.
South east operations manager, Gary Coleman, said crews would be working through the night to clean up the scene. “It really shook us up”.
According to TV footages, the lorry was squashed when it passed under the footbridge, bringing down parts of it on the motorway. While we concentrated on reopening the road as soon as possible to help drivers, it was imperative this was done safely.
